Summer Hike Notes

HAVE YOU PACKED YOUR SUN-FACTORS????
Hikers should be aware of the need for sun protection, particularly in the summer months. It is possible to be burned even on quite overcast days. Remember sun burn is not only very dangerous in the long term; it is also very aging!

WHAT ABOUT INSECT REPELLANT???

You don’t need to be in the tropics to sustain quite nasty bites. It is possible to get environmentally friendly insect repellents.

General Hike Notes

PARTICIPATION Mountaineering is an activity with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants should be aware of and accept these risks. People who take part in our club activities do so at their own risk and are responsible for their own actions and involvement.

SUNDAY HIKES Participants on Sunday Hikes must be a member of An Óige Hillwalkers Club. If you are not a member of the Club, but are considering joining, we invite you to participate on our monthly Introductory Hikes.

INTRODUCTORY HIKES An Introductory Hike is organised once per month for aspirant members. Participants on these hikes must be a member of An Óige.

CO-ORDINATION Tickets are given out on Sundays to ensure that participants reserve a bus place as they arrive.

LEADER The leader has the right to refuse anyone who is not adequately equipped (e.g., without appropriate boots, rainwear, food, torch, hat, gloves, etc). The leader may alter the route from that described in the program. The leader sets the pace of the hike and walkers are expected to obey the leader’s instructions at all times.

TORCH During winter months it is essential to bring a (head) torch on all Sunday hikes. Check your batteries / bulb.

ENVIRONMENT Try to reduce the erosion and widening of trails, e.g. do not walk on the edge of worn tracks; walk through the centre of the original track or go several meters into the scruff where the ground is untrodden, walking parallel to but not on the track.

LITTER Litter is unsightly and dangerous to animals. Even bio-degradable items like orange peels and banana skins take years to disappear. Bring all your litter home and try to include at least one extra item from each day out. Do not bury litter – animals will dig it up.

WALKING STICKS In the interest of safety and comfort please keep the pointed end of your walking stick covered, especially when travelling on the bus.

HIKE LEADERS If any member is interested in leading a hike, please contact either:

Tom Kenny      Email: tomk2003@yahoo.ie

Philip Roche    Email: philip.roche@boimail.com

Ring of Imaal

Well done! & Míle Buíochas

The Biennial Ring of Imaal Challenge Walk, which was organised by An Óige with considerable input from The Hillwalkers’ Club, was a great success. The walk took place on Saturday, June 19th. Encouraged by good weather, ninety–three walkers completed the challenging route. Thanks are due to all those who manned checkpoints on the day. Thanks also to Gemma O’Hanlon, Principal of donard National school, who made the school facilities available to walkers and organisers on the day. The work of the dedicated backroom staff - Ann Carpenter, Frank Rooney, Walter Meade, Cathal O’Higgins, Cyril McFeeney and Pearse Foley is particularly appreciated. Well done folks!

Summer Reading

The Flame of Adventure by Simon Yates provides an interesting counterpoint to Joe Simpson’s writings, particularly Storms of Silence. This is a mountaineering travelogue which takes us from Tien Shan to  his experience on the North face of the Eiger to Asia and Australia. We are introduced to an interesting gallery of climbers including the above-mentioned Joe Simpson. The book begins with an interesting reflection contrasting the incividualistic and well-equipped style of western climbers with the camaraderie and communal attitude of a group of Russian climbers with ‘inferior’ who could draw a variety of fresh produce from their packs to cook up a storm on the slopes of Tien Shan and who were to come to his rescue after he sustained a broken ankle on its slopes. Written in a lighter style than Joe Simpson’s work, this is an extremely interesting and readable book. At just over 200pages it is not too heavy to pack into a rucksack for a trip ( even worth jettisoning the fresh carrots and potatoes!).
